ECR vs ECNR: what your passport means for Gulf jobs

Which passport category you have, when you need emigration clearance, and how to change from ECR to ECNR.

Every Indian passport is either ECR (Emigration Check Required) or ECNR / non-ECR (Emigration Check Not Required). For Gulf jobs, this decides whether you need emigration clearance before you fly.

How to know which you have

Look at the address page of your passport. If it says “Emigration Check Required”, you are ECR. If there is no such note, you are ECNR.

Who is ECNR

Common ECNR categories include:

  • People who have passed Class 10 (matriculation) or higher
  • People who have lived abroad for more than three years in total
  • Income-tax payers, professional degree holders, and holders of certain diplomas
  • People aged 50 or above, and children under 18

If you do not fall into any ECNR category, your passport is ECR.

When you need emigration clearance

If your passport is ECR and you are going to work in one of the 18 “ECR countries”, you need emigration clearance from the Protector of Emigrants, applied for through the eMigrate portal. All six Gulf countries — Saudi Arabia, UAE, Qatar, Kuwait, Oman and Bahrain — are ECR countries.

Nurses: nurses going to work in ECR countries need emigration clearance through eMigrate even if their passport is ECNR.

Changing from ECR to ECNR

If you now qualify (for example, you have passed Class 10), apply for a re-issue of your passport with proof, through Passport Seva in India or the Indian embassy abroad. A new passport is issued — the old one is not simply stamped.

What this means on BestArabJobs

Each job shows whether it suits ECR, ECNR or both. Use the ECR/ECNR filter on the jobs page to see jobs that match your passport.
